Canon Brook Trail to Jordan Pond House

When: Noon Start with 4pm finish.

Parking at The Tarn along Route 3

Turn left to follow the Pond along the Kane Path

This route was another great example of the ability of the Acadia Trail workers of the past and present to move large stones and create a safe but challenging pathway, and yet make it feel like nature's force made the rocks fall naturally.

The Kane Path travels along the pond with evidence of massive rock slides where the boulders are larger than stretch Humvee Limos.

At the end of the Kane Path we transitioned to a mixed hardwood forest that began relatively flat with  Dorr Mountain to the north side and a marsh and Canon Brook to the south.

A subtle change in elevation brought us to a 10 foot waterfall followed by a set of pools with granite bottoms.  There was an 7 to 8 inch trout in one of these.  We spent considerable time enjoying the feel of mountain fed water cooling our feet.

The trail took a distinct upward shift and we followed the brook in some challenging vertical moves over boulders and in chasms.  Another pond emerged just when we began to break above the tree line.

We quickly came upon the intersection of the Canon Brook Trail with the Cadillac South Ridge Trail by the larger pond.  There was an overlook with Pemtic Mountain and Northeast Harbor in front of us.  We were soon to make a steep descent and skirt the south flank of Pemetic Mountain and the Carriage Path.

Looking back  to the height we just descended which is a flank of Cadillac Mountain.

Crossing the Carriage Trail section between the Carriage House and Bubble Pond.

Kim has her foot on a piece of birch bark that came off of the tree to the right. I have never seen a section this large.

This is the trail marker for the trail that comes down from the top of Pemetic Mountain on the south ridge.

We took the bus back to the Village Green and then hopped on another one that was bound for Blackwoods Campground.  The first stop was at the Sieur Du Mont Springs which is right beside the Tarn parking lot where the trusty Pilot was waiting for our return.

We drove back to Bar Harbor Campground for the evening's rest and a short dip in the pool.  The cost was $32 USD per night and Kim and I recollected how it cost $11.00 per night when we first started camping there in 1987.

On Sunday Kim and I drove to Eagle Lake and I took a run around the lake which clocked in at 6.7miles on my GPS program on the i-phone.  I ran clockwise around and it felt challenging but I managed to average under a 9 minute mile pace.

Later on we drove around Somes Sound and did some fishing and swimming at Seal Cove Pond.

We stopped at the Little Notch Bakery and Deli in downtown Southwest Harbor for lunch and the obligatory blueberry pie. Then it was back home along I-95.
