November 9, 2013 Penobscot Mountain

Who: Greg, Kim, Thomas
The starting point was the Hadlock Pond parking lot.  We headed south on the carriage path, then took a shortcut trail to a higher location on the carriage path.  We ended up at two spectacular bridges after a short walk.  We headed up the Hadlock Stream trail that wound along a babbling brook.  It was warmer in the woods out of the breeze we could hear overhead.  The open ledges yielded views to the west over Soames Sound and toward the other side of Mt. Desert Island.  I think we viewed the cliffs overlooking Echo Lake.
We mad our way up the eastern shoulder of Penobscot Mountain and could see Penobscot Peak about a half mile away.  We dropped down into the intersection of the two mountains where Sargeant Mountain Pond hides. Some interesting rock formations dotted our trip back above the tree line and to Penobscot Mountain Peak.  A 360 degree pivot included Pemetic Mountain, Cadillac Mountain, Eagle Lake, Frenchman Bay and Hulls Cove, wind turbines 5o miles to the north, Connor's Nubble, Penobscot Mountain, Atlantic Ocean dotted with islands including the Cranberry Islands, Baker Island, Jordan Pond, South and North Bubbles.
We headed out of the wind past the artistic trail cairns to some vertical climbs and bridges to the carriage paths again.  It was getting darker and colder as we force marched back to the van at Hadlock Pond parking.  Along the way were some spectacular bridges.  We drove into a nearly deserted Bar Harbor to Geddy's pub for a great dinner.
